Melvin L. Manning earned an M.S. degree in electrical engineering and his College Teachers Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh after graduating from South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State College. He taught at Cornell University and at the Illinois Institute of Technology before becoming a professor of Electrical Engineering at SDSC. He served as dean of the College of Engineering from 1958 to 1966. In industry, he worked as a development engineer-transformers with the Westinghouse Electric Co. and as development engineer with the McGraw-Edison Co. Manning was a life fellow of IEEE and a life member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi and ASEE. He was a recognized authority in the field of transformers and served as a transformer consultant.
