Dr. Reynolds Faculty Recital

Sep. 16, 2024 7:30 pm

The South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State University School of Performing Arts presents David Reynolds and Friends in a concert of brass ensemble music on Monday, September 16, at 7:30 p.m., in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center’s Founders Recital Hall.

The entirety of the program features music for small groups of instrumentalists. A highlight of the program will be the South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã premier of John Prescott’s Jackrabbit Start for trumpet, trombone and piano. Reynolds and SDSU’s low brass instructor Bradley Snyder performed the premiere of the work last spring while on the campus of Missouri State University. The title is a play on words, noting that it was written for musicians with SDSU connections, and it also refers to inefficient driving habits.

Performing on the program with Reynolds are several SDSU music faculty as well as non-resident musicians Mark Nelson from the South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Symphony; and Washington, D.C.-based trombonist Scott Shelsta. Non-resident musicians appear through support provided by the Patricia Pierce Visiting Artist in Residence program.

Additional repertoire on the program include two masterworks for brass quintet, the light-hearted Music Hall Suite by British-born composer Joseph Horowitz, and the Sextet in e-flat minor by late Romantic Oskar Bohme. The recital ends with an arrangement of incidental music written for the 1936 government documentary, The Plow That Broke the Plains.

The recital is free and the public is invited to attend.
