Saikat Basu earns NSF's prestigious CAREER award for his work in fluid mechanics.

Srinivas Janaswamy, associate professor of food chemistry, has demonstrated how banana peels can be utilized to create biodegradable films — plastic-like material that will decompose in the environment and may one day replace petroleum-based plastic as the dominant food packaging material.

For South ��ֱ���� State University physics majors Gavin Baker and Jax Wysong, it is undergraduate research that has set them apart from their contemporaries. In March, they shared their undergraduate research with those gathered at the mass meeting of the American Physical Society in Las Vegas. It is an international gathering with more than 10,000 participants.

Assistant professor Anamika Prasad is the first mechanical engineering faculty member to receive the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award.

Professor Padu Krishnan of South ��ֱ���� State University’s Department of Dairy and Food Science received the 2020 Edith A. Christensen ��ֱ���� for Outstanding Contributions in Analytical Methodology from the Cereals & Grains Association. He is the first South ��ֱ���� State University faculty member to get the award, which recognizes the central role analytical methods play in cereal and grain research.

South ��ֱ���� State University associate professor Robert McTaggart was selected as the Society of Physics Students’ Outstanding Chapter Advisor for 2019-20. According to SPS, the Outstanding SPS Chapter Advisor ��ֱ���� is the most prestigious SPS award.

Imaging engineers are testing a prototype device to calibrate sensors on Earth-imaging satellites and conducting research to validate new remote sensing products.

South ��ֱ���� State University professor Sanjeev Anand is not resting on his laurels and has many more research ideas underway. The IDFA is the sponsor of this ADSA award, which Anand said is the highest research award given in the discipline. Anand was also recognized for his excellence in the classroom with the 2018 IDFA Teaching ��ֱ����.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new South ��ֱ���� Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) on the South ��ֱ���� State University campus in Brookings will be held on Sept. 6. The ribbon cutting and a short program will begin at 4:30 p.m. and guided public tours will immediately follow the program, with the last tour departing at 7:30 p.m.

“You can learn a lot here in a small amount of time.” That sentiment expressed by Dillon Nelson, an Oglala Lakota College junior, typifies the experiences of five undergraduates who did research this summer at South ��ֱ���� State University through a National Institute of Food and Agriculture program.
