Scholarships

The South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State University Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences has scholarships available for incoming freshmen and upper-class students active in the pre-veterinary medicine program. To apply for these departmental scholarships students will need to fill out the Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences College online application.

Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship

Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary medicine

Other Criteria: The awards are given annually to registered pre-veterinary medicine students. Students are awarded based on academic performance, involvement in à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã-related activities and demonstrated interest in the veterinary medical profession. The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Sciences and Biomedical Department.

The Freeman J. Lewis Memorial Scholarship was provided through a generous bequest left by Lucile Tinsley of Rapid City in 1989. The scholarship is named for Tinsley's father, Freeman Lewis, who died in 1919. Tinsley's fondness for à£à£Ö±²¥Ðãs and her desire to help her home state prompted her to provide this scholarship.

J. Michael Robbie Scholarship

Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary medicine

Other Criteria: The award is given annually to students majoring in pre-veterinary medicine, with academic achievement, leadership potential and financial need. Preference shall be given to students in greatest need of financial assistance. The recipients are selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary Sciences and Biomedical Department

J. Michael Robbie is a native of Minneapolis. He earned his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University in Mechanical Engineering and went on to earn his graduate degree from the University of South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã in Law. In 1967 he moved to Florida when his family purchased the Miami Dolphins football team.

DR. Harry Halverson Memorial Scholarship

Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary medicine

Other Criteria: The award is given annually to a sophomore student enrolled in pre-veterinary medicine. The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary and Biomedical Science Department.

The Dr. Harry Halverson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1973 by Edna Halverson in memory of her husband, Harry.

Halverson was born in 1896 in Brookings. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in England and France during World War I. In 1920 he graduated from SDSU and then taught in high schools for a number of years. In the 1930's he decided to begin a career in veterinary medicine and obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1936.

Halverson and his wife, Edna, moved to Flandreau, South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã, where he was engaged in the veterinary field for almost 40 years. He was well-known in the area and the state for his work and involvement in local and statewide affairs.

Richard and Carol Dierks Scholarship

Major to Qualify: Pre-veterinary Medicine

Other Criteria: The award is given annually to a third or fourth-year student majoring in pre-veterinary medicine, who has a strong possibility of acceptance into the professional DVM program. Financial need will also be a consideration. The recipient is selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department.

Job Opportunities

The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department hires many students on a part-time basis to supplement their educational experience and help defray college expenses. Positions are open on an as-needed basis in the administrative units within the department: The Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) and the Animal Resource Wing (ARW). There are also frequent part-time employment and volunteer opportunities in the department's many research laboratories. Applications for employment within the department are available at the departmental business office (SAR 1100).
