South 啵啵直播秀 State earns STARS Silver Rating for sustainability

STARS Silver

Story written by: Matthew Schmidt

South 啵啵直播秀 State University received a STARS Silver Rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System, is a benchmarking tool that measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education. SDSU received a bronze rating in 2016.

鈥淚 am excited about the increase in reported class projects that focused on improving campus sustainability,鈥 said Jennifer McLaughlin, SDSU鈥檚 sustainability specialist, a position housed in Facilities and Services. SDSU has 156 sustainability-focused and related courses. 鈥淚鈥檓 also excited about the next steps and working with departments to see how we can improve our campus sustainability further.

鈥淎 key takeaway from the report is how broad and encompassing sustainability is. It shows how sustainability truly goes beyond just recycling,鈥 continued McLaughlin, who noted more than 100 people contributed to the report. 鈥淓fforts from all across campus, whether in academics, policymaking, operations or student engagement, all are important for creating a sustainability culture. I hope departments take a chance to review the report and see where they can have an impact.鈥

Participants report achievements in the areas of innovation and leadership, operations, academics, engagement, and planning and administration. According to McLaughlin, SDSU earned innovation points, which are considered extra-credit points, for having a tobacco-free campus and its efforts creating the Wokini Initiative, Jack鈥檚 Cupboard and the student impact made when designing and creating Passive House built in Brookings.

The top three most improved categories since the 2016 report were:

  • Research and scholarship increased by 7.33 points;
  • Outreach campaign increased by 4 points; and
  • Sustainability literacy assessment increased by 3.77 points.

With more than 800 participants in 30 countries, AASHE鈥檚 STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university鈥檚 sustainability performance.

Upon the report鈥檚 submission, universities are rated based on the percentage of points earned: platinum, gold, silver, bronze and reporter. Unlike other rating or ranking systems, this program is open to all institutions of higher education and the criteria that determine a STARS Rating are transparent and accessible to anyone. Because STARS is a program based on credits earned, it allows for both internal comparisons as well as comparisons with similar institutions.

The STARS rating lasts for three years.

鈥淪TARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,鈥 said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. 鈥淪outh 啵啵直播秀 State University has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS Silver Rating and is to be congratulated for its efforts.鈥
