The Wintrode Student Success and Opportunity Center, established in 2007, has made significant strides in its 16 years of operation, increasing its services to students by over 400%. This remarkable growth underscores its commitment to fulfilling the vision of Virgil and Josephine Wintrode, who aimed to assist students in surmounting challenges and attaining the skills and self-assurance necessary to realize their educational and professional aspirations.

The core mission of the center, which relocated to Wagner Hall this fall for greater accessibility, revolves around bolstering the connections among various SDSU student success offices, elevating student success initiatives and facilitating students' access to essential resources. It strongly aligns with the university's land-grant mission, advocating for educational inclusivity.

Notable accomplishments from the past year include:

100% of students who engaged with the coordinator for student success and opportunity reported personal and professional growth.

  • 100% of the Upward Bound class of 2023 graduated on time, with 87% moving on to college.
  • All respondents to a summer bridge survey felt better prepared for their college journey.
  • 88.6% of participants in TRIO Student Support Services were retained from fall 2022 to fall 2023.
  • 99.2% of students, according to a First-Year Advising Center survey, benefited from reflective growth discussions with their advisors.
  • 84.3% of students surveyed took steps to address performance notifications or enhance class performance based on early alerts.
  • Wintrode Tutoring Program users reported increased knowledge of learning strategies (94.5%).
  • Those who engaged in supplemental instruction achieved a better understanding of their learning processes (96.3%).
  • A significant 71.6% of students who completed the Academic Success and Recovery Program persisted into the fall 2023 semester, compared to only 27% of those who didn't complete the program.

The First-Year Advising Center plays a pivotal role in assisting students in their transition to college life and building a strong academic foundation. Academic advisors adopt a holistic approach to student development, aiding students in course registration, campus and career engagement, financial well-being and academic performance. Maintaining regular contact throughout the year, advisors support students in making informed decisions as they pursue academic, career and personal objectives.

Notable outcomes from the advising center encompass:

  • Accumulating a total of 7,609 advising contacts with 2,425 unique students, averaging 3.1 visits per student.
  • 99.2% of students who responded to a survey highlighted the value of their advisor's guidance in identifying growth opportunities.
  • An impressive 99.4% of surveyed students reported creating a plan for improvement based on reflections for growth in collaboration with their academic advisors.

The Wintrode Student Success and Opportunity Center, in harmony with its founders' intentions, has consistently proven its dedication to nurturing student success and fostering an environment where each student can aspire and thrive.
