Danielle Wermedal, a senior secretary for South ֱ State University's human resources department, has been named SDSU’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for March.

She will be honored at a reception held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, March 15, in Morrill Hall 104.

Wermedal has worked at SDSU for the past 2 1/2 years. She started in the payroll office as a temporary employee in 2021, then transitioned to a secretary position seven months later.

Billie Jo Pirlet, a senior accountant in the payroll department, said, “Dani works at the front desk of the HR department and is the perfect person for the position because of her positive attitude, knowledge base and friendly demeanor. She greets each person that comes through the door with a ‘welcome’ and a smile on her face.”

Pirlet praised Wermedal’s attention to detail and said Wermedal strives for excellence when performing her duties and knows the answer to a vast array of questions that come her way.

Brenda Ferguson, a system payroll coordinator, noted Wermedal’s excellent customer service skills and positive attitude.

“Dani goes above and beyond what is expected of her. She is a team player and is always willing to assist the department with other projects. Dani is a kind and caring individual, an excellent employee and deserves to be awarded Employee of the Month,” Ferguson said.

Linda VanMaanen, a system payroll coordinator, also praised Wermedal’s attitude and dedication to her work.

“Dani is always willing to help anyone who needs assistance, even if it does not necessarily fall within her duties. She makes the most of each and every day, no matter how busy or hectic it is,” VanMaanen said. “She is such a bright light when it comes to troubleshooting a problem and gives her very best each time. The best part is her attitude and desire to help people. It is just contagious.”

Wermedal earned her undergraduate degree in communication studies and theatre from SDSU. During her time as a student, she was involved with the State University Theatre, Prairie Repertory Theatre and Alpha Psi Omega. Before returning to SDSU, she worked for professional theatre organizations in Connecticut and Florida.

She comes from a family of SDSU alumni, including her parents and brother.

“I am truly honored by this recognition,” Wermedal said. “It is a privilege to serve the staff and students in my position here at SDSU, and I am incredibly grateful for the support.”

All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
