Yucheng Liu, head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, has become a Distinguished Member of the American Society for Engineering Education.
He is in the first cohort to receive the title as this is a new designation for the organization, which seeks to advance engineering education at all levels of the profession. Liu has been a member since 2011 and has held offices in the organization since 2019.
Liu, who joined the faculty as department head in 2021, said, “The Distinguished Membership with the American Society for Engineering Education is a great honor. It recognizes my long-standing involvement and service to the ASEE community as well as my contributions to mechanical engineering education and my commitment to my students.
“This recognition motivates me to continue striving for excellence in engineering education and to achieve even greater outcomes in my career. It also serves as a testament to the incredible support I’ve received from my colleagues, students, supervisor, alumni and university leadership. I wouldn't have achieved this without them.â€
Liu is currently chair of the North Midwest Section of the organization after serving as chair-elect last year. He also was secretary of the graduate studies division in 2022-24. Liu served in the professional skills division of the Southeastern Section, beginning as secretary in 2019 and advancing to vice chair and then chair in 2021.
To be considered for the honor, the nominee must have at least 10 years of continuous professional membership, published at least six papers and have at least two years of service in the organization.
The American Society for Engineering Education offers four levels of membership: member, senior member, distinguished member and fellow.
Liu, who also is the inaugural Duane Sander Endowed Professor in Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship, came to SDSU after working seven years at Mississippi State University.
