Student Attendance and Related Issues Accommodations

Class Attendance Policy and Related Issues

According to University Policy 2:5 on class attendance, faculty members determine their own course attendance policies. Students are strongly encouraged to communicate with their professors regarding class attendance, course requirements, and deadlines in a timely manner. Any issues related to disabilities will be kept as private as possible.

Both professors and students have responsibilities when it comes to attendance and related matters.

Please contact the Office of Disability Services if you need further assistance or information.

Expectations for Effective Student Use of Attendance-Related Accommodations

Do not wait until you have missed class or assignments to talk to your professors about challenges you are facing. It is important to note that some accommodations may not be appropriate for every course.

Accommodations should only be used for the specific disability, medical or health condition that is documented with the Office of Disability Services (ODS). Using accommodations for other reasons, like a common cold or other non-medical issues, is not allowed and could result in a referral to student conduct.

Good communication with your professors and ODS can make your accommodation more effective. You might also discover additional support options through open and timely conversations. While you are not required to share detailed medical information, it might help your professors better understand your needs.

Keep in mind that accommodations have limits. They do not allow you to miss class whenever you want. Most courses have an absence limit, and if you exceed it, you may not be able to meet the course objectives. Professors are required to maintain academic standards, so in some cases, a medical withdrawal might be necessary. Regardless, you are still responsible for completing all classwork.

The ODS encourages all students to develop strong time management and decision-making skills. Accommodations are not meant to cover issues related to poor planning. Generally, assignments with more than one week's notice can be completed with good planning, and an accommodation should only be needed in rare circumstances.

If your absences start to interfere with the course, your professor may contact the ODS. ODS will follow up with you to discuss your options, which may include withdrawing from the course for medical reasons.
