Preparing Scientists to Solve Grand Challenges

Are you interested in preparing for a career that positions you to address critical issues such as efficient food production, natural resource sustainability, quality of life and health of humans, à£à£Ö±²¥Ðãs and plants? If so, a Ph.D. in biological sciences just might be for you.

This is a cooperative program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in biological sciences. Departments that cooperate in the program are agricultural and biosystems engineering; agronomy, horticulture and plant science; à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã science; biology and microbiology; dairy and food science; health and nutritional sciences; natural resource management; and veterinary and biomedical sciences at South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State University.

The doctoral programs in biological sciences allow for considerable latitude in the education and training of students. The plan of study can be designed to meet the interests and individual needs of the student. While the training of most students is largely directed to a single discipline represented within one of the participating departments, cross-discipline training is available.

Is it for you?

This program will be a good fit if you:

  • Have an undergraduate or master’s degree in basic science, agriculture, food science, nutrition or natural resources.
  • Enjoy life and natural sciences and want to address critical issues related to efficient food production, natural resource management, environmental sustainability or health of plants, à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã or humans.
  • Want to develop multidisciplinary expertise to address complex problems.
