#MeetSDStateNursing—Callie DeBoer

Callie and her daughter

Meet Callie, a B.S.N. student at the Rapid City site, who had the opportunity to get her nursing degree in her hometown.

What motivated you to choose a career in nursing? A passion and love for caring for others.

Why did you choose SDSU to pursue your nursing degree? I chose South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State University to pursue my nursing degree because of the opportunity to receive my B.S.N. and be a part of a school with such a great reputation. I also appreciated that I could earn my degree without having to relocate.

What clinical experiences have you enjoyed the most and why? I have really enjoyed all of my clinical experiences. I love to getting to shadow so many different types of nurses in numerous settings. At the top of my list of favorite clinicals are labor and delivery because there are some uniquely beautiful and intimate moments that you get to be a part of with your patients.

Organizations that you are involved in: I am a nursing student ambassador for SDSU Rapid City. I am also very involved in my local church and teach Sunday school.

Is there a particular field of nursing you are planning to pursue? I am planning to pursue a career in OB nursing.

What is your big dream? My dream is to obtain an advanced degree to become a nurse practitioner. Through all of my steps of achieving my dreams, my biggest goal is to show my daughter that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.

What advice would you share with a future nursing student? The advice that I would share with future nursing students is to keep pushing forward, work hard, ask for help, use your resources, be active and engaged in your learning, surround yourself with a good support team and never give up. Even at its hardest, nursing school is an incredible experience that you should take time to enjoy and find appreciation for. YOU CAN DO IT and YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
