Ice fishing is a familiar sight to those who live in northern climates. This popular sport has developed many tools over the years including powered augers, shelters with heat, sonars and underwater viewing systems. In this 1868 image, these men used an ax to make fishing holes and seem to be having a pretty good day of fishing.
Edwin Forbes (1839-1895) is the artist who produced this image. Early in his career he painted landscapes and à£à£Ö±²¥Ðãs. His career as an illustrator began in 1861, working for Frank Leslie’ newspaper. He gained fame during the Civil War for his dramatic and detailed depictions of military life.
