National Gardening Month

4/7

April is National Gardening Month. After a long cold winter everyone is ready for sunshine, warm breezes and the chance to get dirt under their fingernails. Gardening is a popular hobby today. Gardens provide access to fresh vegetables and fruits and an opportunity for a good summer workout routine. Before grocery stores provided access to foods, many people on and off the farm relied on large gardens to feed their families. Produce was eaten fresh from the garden during the spring and summer. Throughout the growing season women were busy canning food for the winter months. This photograph was taken in Brown County in July 1943.
