Honors students are scholars.
They perform at a high level in and outside of the classroom, and earn a significant of university awards. As a prospective or continuing Honors student, you are encouraged to complete scholarship applications at the university, college and departmental levels; and to seek support from outside organizations and agencies.
Nationally and Internationally Prestigious Scholarships
There are several nationally and internationally competitive scholarships available at SDSU. The following prestigious scholarships are coordinated by the Van D. and Barbara B. Fishback Honors College. A student does not need to be active in the Honors College to express interest and seek nomination. Scholarships for Students Continuing their Undergraduate Studies:
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is designed to attract outstanding students into research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year and who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources.
Scholarships/Fellowships for Students Interested in Graduate School in the U.S.:
The Hertz Fellowship provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising graduate students in science and technology. The fellowship includes up to five years of funding, valued at up to $250,000, and the freedom to pursue innovative projects wherever they may lead. In addition, fellows take part in ongoing mentoring, symposia and workshops with our vibrant community of more than 1200 fellows, a set of peers who span disciplines, generations and geography.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is the official federal memorial to our 33rd President. It is a highly competitive, merit-based award offered to students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for a career in public service. The scholarship offers enhanced access to highly competitive graduate institutions, scholar programs such as Truman Scholars Leadership Week, the Summer Institute and other Truman Fellows Programs, and up to $30,000 to apply to graduate study in the U.S. or abroad in a wide variety of fields.
Scholarships/Fellowships for Students Interested in International Graduate Studies:
The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and most celebrated international fellowship award in the world. It is a highly competitive, merit-based award offered to 32 U.S. students who wish to pursue a second B.A. or graduate school at Oxford University. The scholarship provides all expenses for two or three years of study. This covers all fees, a stipend for necessary expenses, and transportation to and from England. This is an average value of $70,000 a year.
