Child and Family Resource Network to host ‘Common-Sense Parenting’ classes in January, February

The Child and Family Resource Network at South ֱ State University is hosting its next “Common-Sense Parenting” class series starting Jan. 7.

The free, six-class series is designed for parents and individuals who engage with school-age children, kindergarten through 12th grade.

Classes will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays at the Pugsley Center on the SDSU campus. Sessions are planned from early January through mid-February for:

  • Session 1: Jan. 7
  • Session 2: Jan. 14
  • Session 3: Jan. 21
  • Session 4: Jan. 28
  • Session 5: Feb. 4
  • Session 6: Feb. 11

Parents who have accurate information about development, temperament and social and emotional growth are more likely to experience increased satisfaction and enjoyment in parenting their school-age children.

Class participants will learn how to reduce family stress, support success in school, diminish yelling and fighting, and reduce problem behavior. Parents can also enrich their relationship with their child and increase their and their child’s confidence.

Past participants have said they appreciate what they learned and accomplished with the help of the class.

“The most useful skill I learned was how to help my child stay calm or calm down,” one participant noted.

“Planning ahead and talking to my child about expectations beforehand was really helpful to me,” another added. “I learned what rewards and consequences I could have for my child, and how to be ready to use them.”

The certificate awarded for course completion is approved by Court Services and the Department of Social Services.

Registration is required for the free classes and can be done online, by calling 1-800-354-8238 or 605-688-5730 or by emailing the Child and Family Resource Network. Parking is available in the lot north of Pugsley.
