The South ֱ State University Concert Choir, under the direction of associate professor Andrew Robinette, will present “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass” at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 30, in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center.

Robinette, conductor for the performance, reflected on the unusual pairing of the sacred choral arts tradition with the sparkling, down-home sound of banjo, mandolin and fiddle. “It is exciting for me personally to conduct the SDSU Concert Choir in a style of music I grew up with in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.”

The choir will be accompanied by Minnesota-based bluegrass band Monroe Crossing. The group chose its name to honor Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music, and its superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

The music for “The World Beloved” was written by award-winning composer Carol Barnett, who said, “My hope is that listeners coming from one tradition — classical or bluegrass — and perhaps dubious about the other, might discover something new and wonderful in the combination, as I have.”

The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
