Shearing sheep is done to all sheep whether it’s a wool or meat breed. Sheep are generally shorn each spring so they have wool to keep cool in the summer and more to stay warm in the winter.

It’s Frost Fest week here in Brookings – a celebration of winter in the Midwest! COVID-19 has us celebrating a bit differently this year, so we’re showing you an easy, fun, and frosty recipe to make at home - homemade ice cream.

In the 1930s, sheep shearers moved away from hand powered “blade” shearers to clippers powered by gas motors. Clippers were quicker than blades, cut a more even fleece (pictured here on the ground next to the sheep) and caused less strain on the hands.

In the 19th century men and women wore gloves when they were outdoors. If a person could afford it, they had a wardrobe of gloves. There were gloves for visiting, shopping, attending events and all different occasions. Gloves were made of a variety of materials; kid leather was popular for gloves.
