This postcard titled Elevator Row, Pukwana is postmarked 1908 and was sent to Charles Winksworth, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The message on the back reads “Dear Cousin, This is a photo of the elevators we have in our town. I suppose they will look small to you. With love from your loving cousin Muriel.”
Printed in the lower left of the postcard margin is "Made especially for S. W. Sedgwick.” Sedgwick probably sold or gave away the cards to promote his business. Samuel W. Sedgwick (1839-1917), according to the 1900 U.S. Census, was the postmaster in Pukwana. The 1900 U.S. Census lists his occupation as a lumber dealer in Pukwana. Orah M. Glass’ The History of Pukwana and Vicinity, ca. 1970, page 14 mentions Sedgwick:
"The S. W. Sedgwick family came here from Kimball. Sedgwick managed the J, A. Smith Lumber Yard. The business was bought by F. E. Weiss and Sedgwick remained as manager until he was appointed Postmaster. W. T. Cundiff then assumed management of the lumberyard. The Sedgwick home was always open to young folks as Pearl, Clarence and Edith had a host of friends. Anyone participating in the many social affairs there cannot help having pleasant memories of the Sedgwick’s and their hospitality." (1992:094:0648)
