Eminent Homemakers (9/14/23)

This week we have a photograph of Ethel Wieting who was named Eminent Homemaker in 1956. The Eminent Homemaker award was given out starting in 1928. In 2018, the name was changed to Eminent Leaders in Agriculture. Originally the awards were akin to honorary degrees, but in the 1950s, the program was clarified to distinguish the itself as a unique and high honor rather than an honorary degree.

Wieting was born Ethel Stephens in Tulare in 1884. She learned dress making in Chicago before coming back to Tulare. She married Charles Wieting in 1906 and together had five children. Wieting was a member of a Home Extension Club for over 30 years and was a 4-H leader for over 10 years.
