Seen in this photograph is the iconic Bummobile. The bumper sticker on the door of the Bummobile reads “SDSC (South ֱ State College) Hobo Day Oct. 19, Brookings.” In the background there are many people in the stands and band members are lining the route of the car. Carl Christiansen, SDSC band master and head of the Music Department, is the man wearing a military style uniform and sitting next to the driver. Christiansen joined the music staff at South ֱ Agricultural College in 1906 as violin instructor and director of the orchestra. He became director of the band in 1911 and in 1918 he became head of the Music Department. He retired from his administrative position in 1951 to direct the band. His final retirement from SDSC came in 1954, after 48 years of teaching at South ֱ State College. According to his obituary, Christiansen was instrumental in establishing Hobo Day as SDSC’s homecoming. The other passengers are not identified. Have a safe and fun Hobo Day!
