This week’s What’s New Wednesday features an invention that supposedly saved time. Invented by Ed Hansky of Deadwood, SD, this hot iron brand employed gas to heat it. According to information with the brand, the gas would flow from a tank on the 3’ handle (not shown). Feeding slowly into the V shaped tank, the gas would heat up the metal, allowing the now heated bottom to brand an ֱ.
According to information on file, Hansky ran a ranch, the Lazy T Bar, which was around 1.5 miles north of Thunder Butte Creek and 13 miles northwest of Bison. He also supported himself as a contractor in Deadwood when he didn’t make money ranching. In 1905 Fred Jennewein and Albert McKinstry bought out the brand very shortly before Hansky died. Unfortunately, the new brand never worked very well, therefore it didn’t gain popularity.
