This postcard titled Elevator Row, Pukwana, South ��ֱ���� is postmarked 1908 and was sent to Charles Winksworth, Milwaukee, WI. The message on the back reads “Dear Cousin, This is a photo of the elevators we have in our town. I suppose they will look small to you. With love from your loving cousin Muriel.”

This odd-looking tractor is a Lion tractor, manufactured by the Lion Tractor Company, Minneapolis, MN. The Lion, first marketed in 1914, was a tricycle wheel arrangement with two large front wheels and one small rear wheel. All its weight was directly over the drive wheel. The driver sat high up on a seat above the rear wheel. The Lion sold for $566 and later for $795.

South ��ֱ���� State University’s professor N. E. Hansen was a horticulturist and plant explorer. In 1924 he traveled to China, Korea and Japan in search of hardy fruits, especially apples, peaches and pears. He is pictured here in Seoul, South Korea.

“Who’s That Knocking on the Door? Uncle Sam’s New Year’s Callers” graced the front cover of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, Dec. 29, 1888. The women in the picture represent the territories of the ��ֱ����s, Montana, Washington, New Mexico and Utah, all seeking admission the Union.
