International Student Resource Guide

The following is a list of campus and community resources that may help provide assistance as you experience financial, physical and emotional distress.


Helpline Center - 2-1-1

  • Dial 2-1-1 or Text your zip code to 898211.
  • A 24-hour information, referral and crisis helpline that provides resource information covering topics such as food, clothing, financial, medical, mental health, shelter, volunteer opportunities and much more.

Jack’s Cupboard

  • Jack's Cupboard combats food insecurity by ensuring those students who struggle financially to purchase food are provided this free resource supported by students, faculty and staff.
  • It is available to all students with a student ID and a bag to collect food items (although Jack's Cupboard can supply students with a bag, if needed).

  • Distributes food 1-4:30 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Bring valid picture ID and proof of current address.

  • No-cost warm, home-cooked meal served every Monday night 5:30-6:30 p.m., most Mondays (except holidays).

  • Brookings Area United Way works to provide various organizations with funding in programs that focus on Education, Income and Health.
  • Volunteers and donations are what allow us to affect change and improve lives as we unite as one to make a stronger community.

This fund provides direct, short-term financial assistance to immigrant, refugee or undocumented individuals, families, households and frontline workers directly impacted by COVID-19, who have minimal access to or do not qualify for state and federal support (such as stimulus funding under the CARES Act or unemployment benefits) and meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Those who do not have a Social Security number.
  • ITIN and visa workers displaced due to COVID-19.
  • At-risk individuals (e.g., people over 60 years old, those with chronic illness/are immunocompromised), or families that have an at-risk member.
  • People who are unhoused or have been forced out of stable housing.
  • Homes with children and youth who depend on adults that are undocumented, DACA recipients, on U-visas, are in deportation proceedings or some other immigration status limbo.

Their mission is to help community members who are hard working and other wise self sufficient, but are in crisis and budget difficulty when their paycheck is not enough.

  • Feeding South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã is a hunger relief organization and we are fighting daily to eliminate hunger in this state.
  • Every single week, Feeding South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã assists in providing temporary food assistance to approximately 21,000 hungry individuals and families in our state and our BackPack Program gives food every weekend to over 5,500 kids who otherwise might go hungry.

  • Distribution Site: Ascension Lutheran Church Provides produce, bakery items, canned goods and hygiene supplies.
  • 4-5 p.m., every Thursday (randomly drawn numbers are given out at 3:50 p.m. for line up).

Student Health Clinic

The mission of South à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã State University Student Health Clinic and Counseling Services is to promote the health and wellness of the university community, to enhance student retention and to support the academic and personal success of all students.

  • Vouchers for hotel stays, rent assistance, utility assistance (water, lights, heating and trash for current, past due or disconnect notices), gasoline, car needs, food/meal assistance (please utilize other food pantries first; this is a backup/emergency food resource), long distance bus tickets.
  • Also, can assist after disaster (i.e. house fire, flood, etc.).

  • A retail store which is open to the public that carries donated new and used household, electrical, plumbing, hardware and building supplies at a reduced price. Inventory changes according to donations.

  • Offers used furniture and home furnishings for sale.

  • Dial 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment.
  • Thanks to funding from United Way. The van comes to Brookings 4 times a year and offers free dental appointments for those 21 years old and younger.
