Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid certifications and re-certifications are offered at the SDState Miller Wellness Center through the American Red Cross. This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. During this course, candidates will participate in a practice of skills and a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. 

Courses to certify new lifeguards, as well as review courses for current lifeguards, will be offered at the SDState Wellness Center through the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course. Students must be 15 years of age prior to or on the first day of training to be eligible for this class. This in-person Lifeguard Certification course is the required course for all individuals looking to become lifeguards. During this course, candidates will participate in an in-water practice of skills, demonstrate basic swimming ability and a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. 

The Water Safety Instructor course involves 25 hours of in-person training with a prerequisite test on the first day. Through video and hands-on skill building, the course includes all the water safety and drowning prevention tools and information needed to plan and conduct courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. This includes Parent and Child Aquatics, Pre-School Aquatics, Learn to Swim, Adult Swim and various water safety presentations. This course involves some online pre-course work that is required to be completed by the start of the first day of the course.
